What to wear on a bike ride? Dress up tips for rider
There are no ideal garments when it comes to touring by bike or any bicycle trip. However, you have to know what is most suitable, both in summer and winter if we want to make a bike route. Let’s see some useful or indispensable garments for both seasons.
What to wear on a bike ride?
A perfect dress up and security gadgets are important for bike riders. The accident has no balance. Weather also changes rapidly. So, note down the described items according to weather, place, and distance.
Summer clothes:
Padded cycling pants
The classic cycling shorts are not, in fact, very used to travel. One of its advantages is the filling that provides greater comfort on the saddle after many hours pedaling. The disadvantage is that they must be accompanied by a pair of ordinary shorts, given that, aesthetically, they are not the most appropriate for wandering in towns and cities.
Breathable T-shirts
They cannot miss in the cycle-tourist backpacks. If the trip is short you can take one for each day, otherwise, take what is necessary to wash them or use it a couple of times.
Waterproof footwear and Summer sandals
If you are not sure of finding good weather, it is also recommended in summer. The most robust models are useful both for pedaling with a lot of heat and for crossing a ford; or if you stop at a beach and other common situations outside the bike.
Sunglasses
There is a lot of talk about polarized glasses, let’s see what their benefits would be:
- filter out ultraviolet rays
- they orient the light and reduce the amount that reaches the eye
- increase contrast and improve perception
The reality is that polarized ones are not indispensable, ordinary sunglasses can be enough.
Summer cycling gloves
They are useful in long routes, to avoid or at least limit the appearance of calluses; but, in particular, with the heat, they can be uncomfortable.
Winter clothing:
Padded long pants
There are different models, more tight or looser; the latter is more versatile both for use on the bicycle and to go out. The advice is to have a pair of dark colors, to mask at least a little, the dirt that accumulates pedaling and thus be presentable in visits to museums, churches, etc.
Winter t-shirts
The advice is the same as with summer shirts: that is breathable. Long sleeves and maybe with a zipper, so that it can be opened without needing to take it off when it is hot (during a climb, for example).
Waterproof and breathable jacket
They come at many different models and prices, some cost as much as the entire trip. Having a super technical jacket in Gore-Tex certainly helps, but you do not have to spend a fortune, a waterproof and breathable jacket is the minimum.
Rain jacket
The most convenient for a trip by bicycle is a jacket not too tight, but at least adjusted at the waist with an elastic. We do not recommend the famous ponchos or very large layers of rain, which can inflate or flap with bad weather, hindering movements on the bicycle. Choose as much as possible a very bright color to be well visible both in the rain and in the fog.
Unlike summer gloves, a pair of long gloves for a winter bike trip is ideal to protect against the cold, especially during descents when you can easily exceed 40 km / h.
