Some people get excited about getting insulation in their lofts, but they don’t think about what the light fittings in their lofts are doing to all that good insulation. When commissioning a loft conversion, for example, the first thing the client normally asks for is to insulate the loft and put down a floor.
The insulation is often a good quality one that can cover the whole of the loft. But when fitting the initial light fitting in the loft, homeowners can find that air rushes out from behind the fitting. They might not think much of it at the time, thinking all is OK as the loft has been insulated.
When we insulate our lofts, we are trying to fill the loft with a solid layer of insulation. But the light fittings don’t let us do that. They just let the air rush out from behind them, so all that good insulation we poured into the loft just seems to disappear, and we don’t realise that the light fittings are the reason. If we don’t put covers over the light fittings in our lofts, then we may as well not bother insulating our lofts. The insulation may as well be put on a bucket with a hole in it.
