Step: 2

If your coat has been in storage for a long time (usually in the summer) and you haven’t made sure to store it properly, it’s most likely covered in dust.

An easy method of dusting a coat is to use a mixture of hot water and ammonia as follows: Pour some hot water into a bowl, then add a generous measure of ammonia. Place the coat spread on a table, with a brush and dry remove all the dust from the coat. Once you’re done, soak the same brush in the water and ammonia preparation and clean the coat evenly with it. Be sure to focus on the areas that tend to accumulate the most dirt, such as the neck and cuffs.

Step: 3

Then, take a clean cloth and moisten it in a mixture of water and ammonia. Before you run it through your coat, make sure you’ve wrung it out well.

When the coat is clean, hang it somewhere well-ventilated, such as your patio or deck. The use of ammonia on the garment will have a disinfectant and cleaning effect, although the strong smell that this product has may surely catch your attention, you should not worry because when it dries, the smell will evaporate completely.

Step: 4

Another method of washing a coat at home is to fill a bucket with warm water and pour a little mild detergent into it. Dip a cloth in the soapy water mixture and gently wipe the surface of the coat. Then, using another cloth dampened with just water, wipe away any remaining soap.

Take a dry cloth and wipe off all excess moisture. Find a place with good air circulation and hang the jacket to dry.

Step: 5

If, on the other hand, you want to clean the coat using a washing machine, it is very important to pay attention to the indications on the labels that we have mentioned before, since depending on the materials of the coat, you must take different precautions.

In a generic way, to wash a coat in a machine you should start by programming your washing machine in the gentle wash cycle, making sure that the water temperature is lukewarm, not higher than 30 ° C. While the machine fills with water, add a 1/4 cup of detergent (it may vary depending on the material of the coat), take the outerwear, and make sure that it does not have anything in its pockets, also close all the closures of it, finally, turn the coat inside out ( that the inner part faces the outside) and put it in the washing machine.

Step: 6

When you put the coat in the washing machine, be sure to add a couple of heavy items as well (for example 2 pairs of jeans ), this way the extra weight will help rub the coat and also give the washer stability.

Once the wash cycle is over, proceed to dry the coat in the dryer, accompanying it with a couple of dry towels so that they absorb the moisture from the coat during the drying cycle.

The drying process can be extended by several drying cycles, once finished remove the coat from the dryer and sponge by hand, removing excess water. Then, repeat the cycle again until the garment is completely dry.

Tips

When the hottest seasons arrive and you temporarily do not use your coats, it is advisable to store them well folded and also inside a well-closed bag, thus preventing them from wrinkling and dusting.

If it is a leather coat, after drying, it is advisable to use a little leather conditioner, giving the material more vitality and giving it a new effect.
