Gloucestershire’s Top Schools

Balcarras School, Cheltenham

This school is a mixed school with academy status. Ofsted noted that the teaching is inspirational with excellent encouragement given to pupils. Standards are above the national average and skills are taught at the pace of each individual learner. The behaviour is good and there is a high uptake of extracurricular activities. Another mixed secondary in the Mitcheldean area of the county. School leaders show true commitment to helping all students achieve. Ofsted noted that all students, regardless of ability make rapid progress and that teaching is outstanding. The behaviour of students is exemplary, and students flourish. Development in cultural, social and moral skills is also outstanding.

The Crypt School, Gloucester

The Crypt School is another that received praise from Ofsted for outstanding teaching. The teachers show passion for their subjects and motivation is high. The school does well for those with disabilities and where English is a second language. Student behaviour is excellent and pastoral care is first class. Marling School, Stroud

Attainment at this school in Stroud is well above average and teaching is again rated as outstanding. It is a school for boys that demonstrates good behaviour and considerate maturity. The sixth form also rates as outstanding with almost all young men moving onto university.

High School for Girls, Gloucester

The attainment of pupils by age 16 is extremely high, with much better than expected progress at every level. The number of A and B grades achieved at A Level is outstanding. There is a very high uptake of extracurricular activities and attendance rates are excellent. Pastoral support is exceptional and academic learning is fully supported with additional lunchtime provision, late opening of the library and sixth formers acting as buddies to younger girls.

Pate’s Grammar School, Cheltenham

This mixed secondary school in Cheltenham is another that Ofsted rates as outstanding. Incredible progress is made in all subjects with exceptional teaching, including the sixth form. The head teacher has a real vision for the excellent personal development and academic achievement of all students. Student behaviour is without fault and demonstrates maturity and a genuine desire to learn.
